Help MPF Grow Prairie Stewardship Fund to $1 Million

Susan Lordi MarkerTo provide a source of consistent funding for a portion of annual stewardship costs, several years ago MPF established its long-term Stewardship Fund. MPF's goal for the fund, before using investment income from the fund for annual stewardship costs, is $1 million.

The Stewardship Fund has grown to more than $900,000, and for the remainder of 2018, our goal is, with your help, to reach $1 million. All prairie supporters are invited to make an AcreKeeper Legacy Program gift of $1,000 or increments thereof, to be restricted to the Stewardship Fund.

MPF members Dennis and Susan Lordi Marker have contributed $18,500 to match AcreKeeper donations. AcreKeeper donors receive a certificate recognizing their gifts and the satisfaction of knowing they have, with each AcreKeeper gift, protected approximately an acre of native prairie forever.

“Walking through original prairie I am constantly amazed at what I hear and see,” said Lordi Marker. “A myriad of colors and textures, and a symphony of birds and insects—always surprises, always discoveries, never boring. Just step out and observe and listen. There is nothing else like it! Thank goodness there are people trying to save—before it’s too late—what little original prairie we have left in Missouri. And with good stewardship, MPF can restore and maintain these precious parcels to be there for future generations. It is such important work, and I feel compelled to be a part of it. I hope you can join me and make a difference in our environment for good!

To make a tax-deductible AcreKeeper gift to MPF, donate online or send a check to Missouri Prairie Foundation, c/o Bank of Missouri, P.O. Box 856, Mexico, MO 65265-0856.

AcreKeeper

AcreKeeper Legacy Program

Donations of $1,000 or more to the AcreKeeper Legacy Program will benefit immediate and long-term stewardship of MPF’s prairies—some of the most biologically rich habitat in the state. If a donor is not a member, $100 of this gift will be directed to an annual membership to MPF.

If your donation is a gift, memorial, or in recognition of a special friend, customer, or relative please include that person’s name and address along with your donation so we can send a certificate to that person.

AcreMaker and AcreKeeper donors will each receive a certificate acknowledging their gifts. Businesses making gifts to these programs can display their certificates—a great way to signal to their customers their commitment to prairie. Donations to these programs also make wonderful gifts.

Make a Planned Gift

Planned giving is essentially the process of making a decision while a donor is alive to give a charitable gift upon the donor’s passing. Your annual membership and other gifts to MPF are vital to our ongoing prairie conservation work. By establishing a planned gift to MPF, you can also ensure that we can continue our work well into the future. Many types of planned gifts also offer tax benefits to the donor.

MPF has established a number of funds with the Community Foundation of the Ozarks—including a Land Acquisition Fund, a Prairie Stewardship Fund, and a Permanent Endowment Fund. You may wish to direct a planned gift to one of these funds or for a specific purpose, such as to support production of the Missouri Prairie Journal or other educational endeavor.

Below are several ways to make a planned gift to MPF:

Create a charitable gift annuity. By establishing a charitable gift annuity to MPF while you are alive, you will decrease the size of your estate and therefore enjoy tax benefits, and also receive fixed payments for the rest of your life. Charitable gift annuities offer payment rates that are more attractive than many other investments, with the rate amount determined by your age. In addition, you have the satisfaction of knowing that your gift will benefit MPF. The Community Foundation of the Ozarks works with Mutual of Omaha to establish charitable gift annuities.

Put a bequest in your will or trust (cash, specific property, or a share of the residual estate). You will make a gift for MPF’s future that doesn’t affect your cash flow or portfolio now, but will provide an eventual estate tax deduction.

Those wishing to make a bequest to MPF may find the suggested wording helpful:
I bequeath ___% of my residuary estate (or $___) to the Missouri Prairie Foundation, a not-for-profit conservation organization, with its address at P.O. Box 200, Columbia, MO 65205 for its ongoing programs in prairie acquisitions, stewardship, and education.

Name MPF as the beneficiary of your retirement plan, leaving other assets to your family. You will eliminate income tax on your retirement plan assets.

Donate a life insurance policy whose coverage you no longer need. You will increase your ability to make a significant gift to MPF.

MPF strongly recommends that you consult an estate planning professional about the above-mentioned and any other planned giving options you may have in mind. If you have questions about specific MPF funds or MPF projects to support with a planned gift, please contact info@moprairie.org or 888-843-6739.
